"Rhino Story"
an exhibition and book launch by Egyptian artists Ahmed Sabry and Mohamed Abdelkarim
June 2013
Mashrabia Gallery, Downtown Cairo, Egypt
This project is the result of several months of collaboration in 2011 between Mohamed Abdelkarim, who was pursuing his studies in Beirut, and Ahmed Sabry, who works in Cairo. Abdelkarim wanted to produce a literary text inspired in its narration style by film and invited Sabry to collaborate with him on the project. Abdelkarim would send him the "scenes" one at a time to work on and develop into paintings. The paintings, however, are not illustrations of the text, as Sabry pushed them in new directions. They continued producing the work in parallel without interfering with one another`s creative process.
In this video, the artists talk about the Rhino, the protagonist of the publication and paintings, as well as the creative process they experimented with to realize the project.
